Dolce Canto Seeks New Artistic Director

Dolce Canto, an auditioned, mixed choir in Missoula, Montana, performing largely a cappella music from a wide range of genres, is seeking an experienced professional to contract as Artistic Director to begin with the 2018-2019 season, preferably August 1, 2018. The successful candidate will have a comprehensive background in choral conducting, repertoire, genres, and performance practices. Compensation for contracted services may be between $7,500-$10,000 per fiscal year dependent on the number of concerts, rehearsal hours, and candidate’s qualifications and experience.

Dolce Canto performs a minimum of two concerts per season, with additional performance opportunities considered with agreement between the Artistic Director, Board of Directors, and choir members. A flexible rehearsal schedule is possible depending on the availability and approval of choir members.

The Artistic Director provides the artistic vision, leadership, and direction of Dolce Canto and as such will:

Contribute to the artistic health and growth of the organization by:

  • Selecting and evaluating choir members annually.
  • Selecting repertoire and acquiring sheet music within established budgetary guidelines.
  • Establishing, maintaining, and disseminating a detailed rehearsal and performance calendar.
  • Directing the choir in rehearsals and in concerts.
  • Selecting and supervising section leaders.
  • Auditioning, selecting, and coaching soloists and smaller groups of singers.
  • Organizing performances for the choir, including annual concerts, outreach performances, and tours.
  • Selecting and negotiating with all artistic collaborators (e.g. accompanists, guest artists, and composers).
  • Communicating with the administrative assistant regarding concert details and equipment needs.
  • Supervising all recording projects.
  • Supervising all commission projects.
  • Assisting the Marketing Committee in the production of concert program books.
  • Supervising the educational initiatives of the organization.
  • Staying current on issues related to the field of choral music.

Participate as an active advisor to the board of directors by:

  • Attending and participating in annual, regular, and special board meetings.
  • Presenting periodic reports to the board regarding the status of the artistic programs and projects of Dolce Canto.
  • Working with the board to establish operating plans and budgets that support the execution of the artistic vision.
  • Serving on and advising committees of the board as pertinent to the artistic direction of the organization.

Contribute to the organization’s public relations and fundraising efforts by:

  • Serving as the official spokesperson and liaison on behalf of the choir.
  • Representing Dolce Canto in media appearances, interviews, and written articles.
  • Collaborating with the Marketing Committee in their efforts to publicize the choir.
  • Collaborating with the Fundraising Committee in their efforts to generate income for the choir.
  • Participating in musical and professional organizations locally, nationally, and internationally.
  • Developing and maintaining relationships with professional colleagues.
  • Participating in community activities that further the name recognition of the choir.
